When choosing a cat its important to remember that like any other pet that you may own, including dogs, cats cost money to take care of properly.
The costs involved with owning a cat are - food, vet bills and litter. Initially you will have to invest in a litter box, a food dish, a water dish, toys, a scratching post, , a pet carrier, and a bed. My advice is to definately get a scratching post if you want to protect your furniture and the carrier is a necessity when taking your cat to the vet. Ever tried to take a cat somewhere it didn’ want to go? You should also look into getting an ID collar as well, just in case your cat ever gets lost.
What you feed your cat will depend a great deal on his age. Older cats require two small meals or one large meal for the day whereas Kittens need to be fed three times a day until about the age of 12 weeks. Between three and six months of age your cat needs to be fed three times a day. Canned food can be fed to cats, and they love it .My 2 cats can detect the noise of a packet opening from quite some distance.! I If you use anything larger than a pouch [small packet] the food will go off if left sitting for even a short period of time. Canned food can become very expensive over time and its not as good for their teeth as the dried food .The dried food helps to keep tartar at bay and so reduces that terrible cat breath!
leave dried food out for your cat daily. As this food makes him thirsty always make sure you leave fresh water each day. The dry food is less expensive that wet food but do not be tempted to buy the cheaper varieties as they do not contain the nutrients your cat needs . Dry food costs less than canned food, and it can also help to prevent the buildup of tartar on your cat’s teeth.
If you own a kitten, you should only give you kitten food designed for him. You’ll also need to clean and refill his water dish every day. Avoid giving kittens milk as it can cause diarrhea.
Cats love to groom themselves and generally will keep themselves very clean .You still need to brush them every day as they shed hair and brushing them will also reduce the chances of hairballs. Make sure your litter tray is in a convenient areas and scoop it out once a day .Depending on the type of litter you may only need to change it once a week .Some litters are more absorbent and less smelly than others .Remember to keep the litter fairly clean as cats do not like dirty litter trays.
Cats are great pets that will provide you with years and years of companionship. As long as you take care of your cat and take him to the vet for his checkups, he should remain healthy. Even though cats can get sick from time to time knowing how to care for him will make a world of difference.
